Disneyland’s the Merriest Place on Earth for Disney’s 50th Anniversary
By Carmel L. Mooney

(Anaheim, California)

Every year is pure magic at Disneyland parks and resorts but this year marks a supremely festive celebration at Disneyland and California Adventure, as both parks celebrate the 50th Anniversary “Happiest Homecoming on Earth.”

This 18-month celebration pays a special tribute to Walt Disney’s original dream of Disneyland, the very park that launched a unique genre of family entertainment that now spans the globe. Nothing can compare to the beauty, magnitude, and magic of walking down Main Street or any of the famous sections of Disneyland this year especially. This year special festivities include the Parade of Dreams, a spectacular Fireworks celebration unlike any other in past years, and the 50th Anniversary Rededication Ceremony.

Highly recommend by many this year is the concierge level at the Paradise Pier Hotel, and for numerous reasons as this provides comfort and luxury along with perks that make a visit to both parks so much more hassle free and convenient. Special touches include a fantastic view of the fireworks nightly from the pool level where the magical sound effects and narration are piped in straight from the Disneyland park itself.

Going “concierge” level affords special privileges like early park entry on some days as well as an all-inclusive breakfast, snacks and drinks throughout the day, an evening cocktail and hors d’oeurves time with wine, cheeses and kid friendly snacks, and an evening dessert hour, all in the special concierge Beach Comber Club room where kids enjoy and are entertained watching Disney movies in a relaxed living room atmosphere alongside parents who savor unwinding from a long day of walking and line hopping with a nice glass of wine.

Kids can also enjoy the heated pool and waterslide outside as well as a mini Disney theater downstairs in the hotel. Little extras like Mickey-themed snacks and sweets on a turned down bed at night, and free DVD rentals aren’t bad either.

This year the live Aladdin Musical Spectacular Show is better than ever. New shows in A Bug’s Land are great, incredible live animation technology in interactive shows like Turtle Talk with Crush is simply amazing, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters uniquely offers a free emailed photo sent back home, and soon to be coming in 2006 is a Monster’s INC “dark ride” attraction and a new Finding Nemo attraction coming in 2007 in the old sub lagoon area.

Visitors can really sense the heightened excitement throughout the park as the old is improved with a complete two year renovation of Space Mountain, and new attractions and traditions are popping up everywhere.

John Mc Clintock of Disneyland publicity points out, “The 60 foot Christmas tree on Main Street USA was actually a gold tree this year with gold ornaments and you’ll see other gold touches that take place only this year.” “The Pixar Characters are here in force for our special Block Party Bash---our 50th anniversary show,” says Mc Clintock

Particularly popular this year is the pin trading tradition where guests trade commemorative and collectable Disney pins with other guests as well as cast members throughout. Hardly a family is found where at least someone isn’t sporting a lanyard covered with a showy collection of Disney pins depicting their favorite characters, rides or Disney milestones or memory. It’s an expensive but fun hobby and if nothing else, it helps to make the time in lines go faster as well as creates friendships and pen pals.

But it’s not just guests who feel the excitement of the 50 year mark. Everyone is excited about this year’s special celebration at Disneyland including Anaheim itself.

“This is really our time to shine. In the 50 years since Walt Disney opened Disneyland, Anaheim has truly grown into a premier business and leisure destination and that is recognized around the world,”says Charles Ahlers, President of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau. “We look at the 50th anniversary year as an opportunity for us to really showcase to the world what a fantastic destination Anaheim and Orange County is.”

Now upon arriving at the airport on your way to Disneyland the magic begins when guests step aboard a new shuttle service at the airport because transportation between Los Angeles International Airport, John Wayne / Orange County Airport and the Disneyland Resort gets magically easier this month as Coach USA/Gray Line introduces “The Disneyland Resort Express.” Coach USA/Gray Line has been appointed the Preferred Transportation Provider by the Disneyland Resort, and has recently introduced Disney-themed buses which operate between the resort and the two major Los Angeles-area airports.

“As the nation’s premier provider of ground transportation, Coach USA/Gray Line is delighted to provide the outstanding customer service that the Disneyland Resort and its guests have come to expect,” said Bryan O’Connell, general manager for Coach USA/Gray Line of Anaheim.
The fleet of new passenger coaches features restrooms, comfortable seating, video monitors and are wheelchair accessible. They operate every 30 minutes between LAX and the Disneyland Resort from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and hourly from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. until Midnight between the John Wayne / Orange County Airport and the Resort, every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and then hourly from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The Disneyland Resort Express operates nonstop between the airports and the Disneyland Resort hotels for arrivals and departures, proceeding to other area hotels for pick up and deliveries, offering a sizable savings from the taxis fares.

“By working with Coach USA/Gray Line, we can offer a frequent and reliable airport transfer service between our Resort and major area airports,” noted Claire Bilby, senior vice president of Sales & Distribution Marketing for the Disneyland Resort. “Coach USA/Gray Line’s coaches, painted with Disneyland Resort icons and our 50th Anniversary logo, are clearly identifiable and easy for guests to spot at airports. The vacation magic begins when they board the Disneyland Resort Express.”

Additionally, the Disneyland Resort will provide routine training for Coach USA/Gray Line’s drivers on new entertainment events and attractions, so that the drivers can act as well-informed representatives of the Resort’s fun and adventure.

So this year experience the unique magic that Disneyland offers, as it isn’t just any-’ol-time that the happiest place on earth has a 50 year anniversary and so much to celebrate!
