Get a Taste of the Afterlife
-- * Recommended by Travel with Humor * In historic Mokelumne Hill, California, this beautiful old hotel was built during the California Gold Rush. The Hotel Leger started as a canvas and wood building, survived several fires and restorations, and has evolved into the grand old lady she is today. Dressed in bright yellow with frilly white trim, the building is as beautiful inside as it is outside. Said to be haunted by several ghosts, including the original owner, George Leger, the genuine people who own and run it would make anyone want to stick around. While there are no televisions, no radios, clocks, or phones in the rooms, the settings definitely set your mind free to roam, perchance landing in the days when the hotel was first built. The restaurant serves great food (I can personally recommend the pizza!), and the saloon has a tasty specialty drink, an "Orange Drop" that they make with oranges from their own trees in the back of the hotel, which are said to have survived a fire at the hotel in the 1870's. Combined with the current hotel, the historical courthouse and jail add to the ambiance, and the stories of the old days are well-worth spending a night listening to. The old hanging tree has long since disappeared from behind the hotel, but sometimes, late at night, you can almost hear the creaking of the rope waiting for the next judgment day. The town itself is worth walking around and exploring. The old buildings are fascinating, and the library is fun, too. Enjoy the detour!
