First Time Skiers and Snowboarders of all Ages are Always Welcome at Kirkwood
By Carmel L. Mooney

Ever wanted to introduce the kids to something new like skiing but perhaps you were a little intimidated yourself or weren’t sure where, and how? Maybe you always wanted to try something new as a family…here’s your chance to make a memory.

Junior skiers, snowboarders and first time skiers are welcomed, pampered, and befriended at Kirkwood Mountain Resort where Californians have enjoyed some of the best ski conditions and America’s deepest snow for decades.

Kirkwood’s Children Ski and Board School is located at Timber Creek for ages 4-12. They cater to all ability levels with kind, patient and dedicated instructors who specialize in building children’s self esteem and confidence in a safe, nurturing, and fun arena. They offer half day and full day lessons and programs which even include lunch, snacks, and activities for all age children. The Meadows condominiums are just a few steps away and offer families a great central location to stay and enjoy all Kirkwood has to offer. There is even a heated pool, spa, and gym for guests to enjoy after a long day on the slopes.

In addition to snowboarding and skiing, Kirkwood offers a wonderful snowshoeing experience that kids love, There they can explore trails, some of which, like the Kiddie Kilometer are designed with kids in mind to learn history and about the native plants and animals of the area. There are signs of animal footprints for kids to match with their corresponding critters, only adding to the fun and educational benefits. So while the kids get exercise and learn a new sport, they actually sneak in some learning at the very same time.

Kirkwood offers ice skating and tubing on the weekends for families and an entire village consisting of numerous acclaimed restaurants and specialty shops.

Known for its microclimate of massive snowfall, Kirkwood Mountain Resort may be a little off the beaten path but thankfully the road getting there is a straight shot. And another plus when visiting this all season resort, is that minimal congestion is the key on both roads and slopes, when it comes to Kirkwood.

Good news for visitors is that getting to Kirkwood Mountain Resort is quicker this year thanks to additional passing lanes on scenic Highway 88 and the new Highway 49 Bypass. Highway 88 – an Official State Scenic Highway as well as a U.S. Forest Service Scenic Byway accented by wildlife and beautiful landscapes, making it a great alternative to the more crowded Lake Tahoe entry points of Highway 50 and I-80.

The resort’s geographical setting in a box canyon, surrounded by 10,000-ft. mountains and national forests allows it to average an annual snowfall of 725 inches. As of this writing, Kirkwood had a total season-to-date snow fall of 233 – 305 inches and base depths of 117 – 159 inches, the most natural snowpack in the Lake Tahoe area. Its snowfall legacy complements its reputation of uncrowded lift lines and ski runs, a prefect combination for first timers or novices. Kirkwood is home to more than 60 trails and 2,300 skiable acres with some of the most diverse terrain at Lake Tahoe.
